With its repetition of squares and rectangles, Mandarin by Ettore Sottsass appears to the observer as a solemn plateau rather than a mere table. The ironic attitude of Memphis plays with this ambiguous impression. The transparent glass surface of Mandarin rests on an interesting white framework of industrial forms, supported by solid legs that become true spatial totems.
