In 1983 Ettore Sottsass made a series of vases named for rivers – a clear reference to water – vertically stacking bizarre forms shaped in white porcelain, with a single touch of color. The form of the traditional ceramic vase is broken down and reassembled with interlocking parts, in an unstable balance. The effect is paradoxical and dynamic.
